There are a lot of different kinds of waste out there and you want to make sure that they are handled correctly. In most cases, you can just set the waste out for garbage collectors or recycling collectors to pick up. But, when it comes to hazardous waste, you can't just do that. You need to make sure that you handle it correctly, depending on what kind of waste it is.
Hazardous Waste
Hazardous waste is defined as waste that is dangerous to the public in some way, shape, or form. That can be from direct contact with it, like some kinds of chemicals, or the effects of the waste if it were to get into a water source or into the air, where they would cause dangerous pollution. What are some different kinds of hazardous waste?
Household Hazardous Waste
This kind of waste can also be called other things, including home-generated waste. The things that are considered hazardous waste are generally classified that way when they are thrown away because that's when they can start doing damage. The things that fall under this category can seem like they are pretty innocent and innocuous. The batteries that you use in your remotes or other household items fall into the hazardous waste category. Luckily, they can be easy to dispose of properly. Many large stores, generally box stores, will have a collection point where you can dispose of them safely. You can also dispose of things like your laptop batteries there as well. Other things that fall under this category also include household chemicals like some cleaning products, as well as bug sprays and poisons that can be used to get rid of pests. Drain cleaners are also in the group because of the caustic chemicals that are in them.
Disposal
If you have to dispose of household hazardous waste, there are various ways that you can do it. Some cities and towns have a periodic hazardous waste pick up. That may only happen once or twice a year, but you will be able to put out items that are hazardous, including your old TV and paints that you use in your house. You can also call your state's environmental protection department and get drop off locations in your area so that you can leave those things where they belong.
Hazardous waste management can be done relatively easily, but it is so important to do.
